‘S’ is for Sardine

By Jan Herron

Are you concerned with America's rapid growth in population and the devastating effects that this continued growth will have on the future of our country?

At the current rate of immigration, US population will double this century - within the lifetimes of children born today! In 1965, America stood at 199 million. Because of the 1965 Immigration Reform Act, Congress opened the flood-gates to massive immigration. We grew by 93 million in 40 years. From 293 million, we shall hit 600 million within the next 60 to 70 years. Seventy percent of this doubling population will be caused by massive legal and illegal immigration. This influx requires twice as many houses, cars, hospitals, highways, prisons, schools, and water treatment facilities, etc. The result will be twice as much pollution, urban sprawl and pressure on our dwindling natural resources and the resources that we draw from other countries.

The greatest dilemma overpopulation produces is water scarcity. With 20 million people added to California, five million to Arizona and four million to Colorado, those arid states face horrific water shortages. Once the numbers are manifested, no solutions exist. Citizens will live with water shortages, Sardine can compaction, unending air pollution and loss of quality of life and lowering of standard of living.

It is said "We are a nation of immigrants." But migration has existed for over 10,000 years. All countries are nations of immigrants. At 293 million people, the US is filled to the brim, and it makes no sense to continue filling America's coffee cup.

Because of overpopulation pressures, twenty-five percent of our underground aquifers are not recharging at their natural rates, a portentous trend that predates the current drought. Since 1970, we have degraded and urbanized more than 39 million acres of land, including prime farmland, to make way for the immigrating tens of millions, forcing us to import more and more food.

Even with little or no increase in our current immigration levels, left unchecked, these high levels will continue to cause a doubling of our population within the lifetimes of children born today. It's important to comprehend, because it is your children and grandchildren who will be fighting for survival.

There are no advocates, no lobbyists for their special interests, while their parents and grandparents remain in denial and keep avoiding the #1 issue this country is faced with today. If realized, the proposal would be tantamount to committing a hate crime against future generations. After their initial crime of breaking and entering into our country, illegal aliens commit multiple misdemeanors (driving without licenses) and felonies (document fraud) to stay. President Bush still wants to reward this behavior with the option of eventual citizenship by his second push for amnesty.

Immigration lawyers say that the most often-heard question is, "When's the next amnesty?" That's obvious, because we've already had seven amnesties since the "one-time-only" 1986 amnesty, a fraudulent free-for-all that legalized three million aliens.

With Texas-sized temerity, the President's "not-an-amnesty" amnesty would be backed by "strong workplace enforcement," the same claim made for the '86 amnesty. Cesar Chavez, a foe of illegal immigration, knew his struggling farmworkers' union couldn't compete against wage-undercutting illegal workers. Only after promised adequate workplace enforcement did he acquiesce in the '86 amnesty. Chavez was also opposed to "guest worker plans' for the same reason - it was his UFW (and the other unions') opposition to the bracero program that was instrumental in its being canceled. But the US government double-crossed Chavez and the American people: Real enforcement never arrived. In the following years, illegal immigration increased dramatically, giving us now 20 million illegals from all over the globe.

As Americans digest its implications, support for Bush's yet another try at mega-amnesty, has hit a nerve with citizens. Consistent with public opinion on immigration in general, results from a Roper Poll, for example, show virtually all Americans consider illegal immigration a "serious problem," and a high percentage of those polled agreed with imposing mandatory detention, followed by deportation if necessary to lower the number of illegals to near zero.

The media continues to conspire with the government keeping silent about the worst dangers facing America. Illegal immigration is destroying our country, our jobs, our neighborhoods, our hospitals, schools, national security and every facet of our lives. These wedded politicians and journalists continue their silence. They would rather fill us in on issues of importance like who is the latest husband of Jennifer Lopez.

The silence of our politicians continues to deafen while America slips into the sinkhole of Third World Mexico. It's like quicksand sinking us lower and lower. The President is still pushing "it's not an amnesty, amnesty."

What we need is a "Reality Show" about illegal immigration. A show about truth not fiction.
