Smith: Purging History ~ Assaulting Our American Heritage

Monuments honoring heroes of the Confederate States of America, American heroes in fact, are being removed from the public square, due to a successful presentation of oversimplified arguments and lies by the same progressive Leftist Democratic apparatus that seeks to fundamentally transform America. These assaults on the Southern heritage by politically correct propagandists and arrogant activist ideologues are assaults on our American culture and heritage, or “AmeriKKKa” as the Left calls America; and, it is nothing short of a cultural cleansing campaign, a purging of the truth and history and a national disgrace. In 2015, the Atlanta chapter of the NAACP called for the destruction of the Stone Mountain Confederate Monument, that honors Jefferson Davis, General Robert E. Lee and General Stonewall Jackson. They wanted the nearly 2000 square feet and 12 feet deep carving “sandblasted away”.

In February, the city council of Charlottesville, VA sought to remove Robert E. Lee’s likeness from its 100 year resting place. They have been temporarily blocked by a lawsuit filed by the Monument Fund and 29 other plaintiffs.

Soon protests arose in Charlottesville and NAACP President Rick Turner told the crowds: “I think a decision must be made to remove the statue by any means necessary.”

Oakland Cemetery – Shreveport, Louisiana

However, the City of New Orleans successfully removed the Battle of Liberty Place obelisk on April 4th and statues of Confederate President Jefferson Davis and General Pierre Gustave Toutant-Beauregard on May 11th and May 17th, consecutively. The statue of Robert E. Lee was removed from New Orlean’s Lee Circle on May 19th, while other efforts are appearing nationwide, in places like Houston, Baltimore, St. Louis and Phoenix. (Source)

Starting in 1784, Thomas Jefferson and many righteous men afterwards attempted to abolish slavery until the end of the Civil War, including former slave owners such as James Madison. It is worth observing that while General Ulysses S. Grant owned one slave and his wife owned four slaves until 1859, General Robert E. Lee never owned any.

General Beauregard’s statue was taken down in the dark of night and Lee’s was coming down, when New Orlean’s Mayor Mitch Landrieu (D) revealed an astounding level of ignorance of history, stating: “They may have been warriors, but in this cause they were not patriots. These monuments celebrate a fictional sanitized Confederacy.” Landrieu could not be any more egregiously wrong.

On December 27th 1856, Robert E. Lee wrote to his wife: “Slavery as an institution is a moral and political evil in any country … a greater evil to the white than to the black race … nearly two thousand years [of Christianity] … and even among the Christian nations what gross errors still exist!

Many Confederate generals did not want to secede and neither did Jefferson Davis. More than the issue of slavery that had profited both New England slave traders and Southern plantation owners, the South saw secession as a necessity in the face of the unfair tariffs the North had applied against the South from 1828 to 1832 and beyond, which were placed on goods not made in the South. The 1861 Morrill tariff was the spark for the Civil War. And so, they too pledged their lives, fortune and sacred honor as they seceded from an oppressive federal government to retain their sovereignty, their Constitutional rights and a free government. (Source)

President Abraham Lincoln was not any “Great Emancipator” himself. On August 22nd 1862, he wrote a letter to Horace Greeley, founder and editor of the New York Tribune, who supported a general amnesty for Confederate officials and angered Northeners by signing a bail bond for Jefferson Davis. In part the letter read: “If I could save the Union without freeing any slave, I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves, I would do it, and if I could do it by freeing some and leaving others alone, I would also do that.”

So why do the Leftist mobs of Antifa and Black Lives Matter castigate, impugn and demonize the character and honor of a noble man such as Robert E. Lee, while giving Ulysses S. Grant a pass?

General PGT Beauregard was a St Bernard Parrish native and a man of contradictions, who spent most of his non-military life in New Orleans. He fired the first shots in a war to preserve states rights and slavery, and yet in defeat, Beauregard argued passionately for the right of black people to vote.

So Beauregard is impugned, while a statue of Senator Edward Carmack (D-TN) still stands in Nashville on the south side of Tennessee’s State Capitol Building. Carmack advocated for the repeal of the 15th Amendment, which granted black men the right to vote; he was also the editor of the ‘Nashville Tennessean’ and a coward, who was shot and killed, on Union St. in Nashville, as he hid behind Mrs. Charles Eastman after firing on Duncan Cooper, his nemesis.

It is nearly impossible to find any truth behind the Left’s assertions, that they are campaigning against the “white supremacy” symbolized by Confederate monuments, when most Confederate soldiers did not own slaves by the time the Civil War was burning hot. To claim that the majority of non-slaveholder soldiers, who fought for the South, could have fought and sacrificed their lives and those of their families, so a minority of wealthy aristocrats could retain the “right” to own slaves is preposterous on any analysis.

The logic behind these character assassinations make it inescapably clear that the Left will not be satisfied until every white figure who doesn’t pass their “progressive” scrutiny is cleansed from the Southern culture and American culture too. How much truth must be sacrificed to mold history to fit a single strain of a prevailing political ideology?

Mitch Landrieu and Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh and many other Democrats, along with some misguided and ill-informed “conservatives” say that these men don’t deserve to be honored. Who does then?

      “Stonewall” Jackson

President McKinley had fought against “Stonewall” Jackson, as a teenager, in the Shenandoah. McKinley was at Antietam, the bloodiest single-day battle of the Civil War; and at the start of the Spanish-American War, when Southern volunteers and former Confederate soldiers paraded through Atlanta to fight for a united America, McKinley removed his hat and stood for the singing of ‘Dixie’.

Nearly half of the fifty-five members of the Constitutional Convention owned slaves or facilitated the slave trade. Is anything associated with Benjamin Franklin, Patrick Henry, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and other Founders now considered to be immoral too?

Are Americans really going to allow more monuments to be torn down? Are Americans going to sandblast Stone Mountain Confederate Monument and even Mount Rushmore, sandblasting away our American Heritage? I say “NO”.

Left unrestrained, the radicals of this nation will attempt to purge and destroy every vestige of anything remotely associated with any slaveholder. Our Constitution and even our Declaration of Independence have long been under their assaults, because both were written by white men and slave-owners, and these amended documents halt their own authoritarian agenda. They would scrap these documents altogether if they could, placing them in the dustbin of history and divesting them of honor. (Source)

A history hidden away and purged is a half-truth and a lie, no history at all. America’s sins in slavery are despicable, abominable and dark, however, Her inalienable rights that served as the mechanism to end slavery are virtues to be praised, brilliant as a rising sun.

This is just the actions one expects of those who favor Moscow’s choirboys or the angels of Africa. Not one of these cretins will be thought of favorably by history nor remembered as good people, even by their descendants.

It is you, sir, who purge history with yet another attempt by a Southern apologist to make the Civil War be about something other than slavery. Just stop it. I agree that dismantling statues is stupid and counterproductive, but stop making your argument by insisting that Southern generals and politicians were decent men. They represented an evil, Nazi-like confederacy that was founded for the sole purpose of protecting the large plantation-owners’ slave-holding rights. Anything other excuse for seceding was simply propaganda to hide the real reason. And those generals and politicians you protect at the very least made a grave moral error, to the detriment of their souls, but joining the Confederacy. And if you really want to learn what Jeff Davis was like, read this: http://www.travelynpublishing.com/EighteenMonths.html. When his own inspector reported to him that the commandant of a prison was attempting to starve his prisoners to death, Davis PROMOTED him to the head of all Confederate prisons. ‘Nuff said. The man was evil.

You are attributing something to me that was never “insisted” or stated in the article. I only asserted that many generals, such as Beauregard and Lee were decent men. Nothing was said about politicians, other than Sen Carmack of TN who I castigated for trying to repeal the 15th Amendment.

I a do not make apologies for the South or the evils perpetrated under slavery and Jim Crow laws. The premise of my article is that this attack on Confederate monuments is a Leftist tool to open the door and expand their attacks on any and all facets of American culture.

You obviously didn’t read the article in its entirety or You would have realized this. Much of our heritage revolves around the slave issue and Jim Crow laws. Are We now to rename George Mason University, remove George Washington, Jackson and Franklin from our money because they were slave owners.

Where does it end? That was my point.

And You sound like You might have a bit of Leftist mind-set in You by the manner in which You couldn’t even honestly state what I actually said. You Sir are Intellectually dishonest.

As a side note, You might find it interesting that Many Freed Black Men owned slaves prior to the Civil War. In 1830, about 13.7 percent (319,599) of the black population was free. Of these, 3,776 free Negroes owned 12,907 slaves, out of a total of 2,009,043 slaves owned in the entire United States.

William Ellison was a freed black man and was South Carolina’s largest black slave owner. In the entire state, only five percent of the people owned as much land as William (Ellison Family Graveyard, 2009). It was unusual, but not impossible, for former slaves to own slaves.

When war broke out in 1861, William became a very devout supporter of the Confederacy. William turned his plantation over from being a cotton cash crop to farming foodstuff for the Confederacy when his grandson joined a Confederate Artillery Unit.

Chew on that for a bit and then try again to put words in my mouth Big Boy.

The focus of this piece wasn’t on Jefferson Davis, however, Davis graduated from West Point, 23rd in his class in 1828 and fought with his regiment in the Blackhawk War of 1831. They captured Chief Blackhawk himself. The Indian chief was placed under Davis’s care, with Davis winning Blackhawk over through his kind treatment of the prisoner. So you see, the things You attribute to Davis during the Civil War were obviously perpetrated by the men under him, who acted on their own and outside of orders.

During the Mexican American War, Davis fought in the Battles of Monterrey and Buena Vista, in 1846 and 1847, respectively. At the Battle of Monterrey, he led his men to victory in an assault at Fort Teneria. He was injured at the Battle of Buena Vista when he blocked a charge of Mexican swords—an incident that earned him nationwide acclaim.

Explaining the way his position on the Union had evolved during his time in the Senate, David once stated, “My devotion to the Union of our fathers had been so often and so publicly declared; I had on the floor of the Senate so defiantly challenged any question of my fidelity to it; my services, civil and military, had now extended through so long a period and were so generally known, that I felt quite assured that no whisperings of envy or ill-will could lead the people of Mississippi to believe that I had dishonored their trust by using the power they had conferred on me to destroy the government to which I was accredited. Then, as afterward, I regarded the separation of the states as a great, though not the greater evil.”

In 1853, Davis was appointed secretary of war by President Franklin Pierce. He served in that position until 1857, when he returned to the Senate. Although opposed to secession, while back in the Senate, he continued to defend the rights of southern slave states. Davis remained in the Senate until January 1861, resigning when Mississippi left the Union.

Something else You should be made aware of is the fact that large numbers of free Negroes owned black slaves; in fact, in numbers disproportionate to their representation in society at large. In 1860 only a small minority of whites owned slaves. According to the U.S. census report for that last year before the Civil War, there were nearly 27 million whites in the country. Some eight million of them lived in the slaveholding states.

The census also determined that there were fewer than 385,000 individuals who owned slaves. Even if all slaveholders had been white, that would amount to only 1.4 percent of whites in the country (or 4.8 percent of southern whites owning one or more slaves).

In the rare instances when the ownership of slaves by free Negroes is acknowledged in the history books, justification centers on the claim that black slave masters were simply individuals who purchased the freedom of a spouse or child from a white slaveholder and had been unable to legally manumit them. Although this did indeed happen at times, it is a misrepresentation of the majority of instances, one which is debunked by records of the period on blacks who owned slaves. These include individuals such as Justus Angel and Mistress L. Horry, of Colleton District, South Carolina, who each owned 84 slaves in 1830. In fact, in 1830 a fourth of the free Negro slave masters in South Carolina owned 10 or more slaves; eight owning 30 or more.

According to federal census reports, on June 1, 1860 there were nearly 4.5 million Negroes in the United States, with fewer than four million of them living in the southern slaveholding states. Of the blacks residing in the South, 261,988 were not slaves. Of this number, 10,689 lived in New Orleans. The country’s leading African American historian, Duke University professor John Hope Franklin, records that in New Orleans over 3,000 free Negroes owned slaves, or 28 percent of the free Negroes in that city.

To return to the census figures quoted above, this 28 percent is certainly impressive when compared to less than 1.4 percent of all American whites and less than 4.8 percent of southern whites. The statistics show that, when free, blacks disproportionately became slave masters.

I hope this helps remove the blinders from Your eyes and brings You forth from Your own dark ignorance.

Just wow, Jason. Cafeteria history–pick the parts you like. Then there are all the straw man arguments to obfuscate the actual issue. I’m still wondering how you could interject the idea that the goal of “Leftists” (a great 1950s scare word) is to attack “white people.” Lots of dog whistles in this article.

Bryce Buchanan, you are correct to say “the Klan was essentially part of the Democrat Party.” Indeed, during the 19th century and most of the 20th century, the Klan was inseparable from the southern conservatives of the Democratic Party. Many local politicians and even sheriffs and police chiefs were Klan members, good, God-fearing Democrats all. The Klan was effectively the paramilitary arm of the Democratic Party. But that was then…

Then the federal government, courtesy of JFK’s initiative and LBJ’s hard work, passed the CRA and the VRA, which “lost [the voters of] the South forever.” Nixon developed the Southern Strategy for the GOP to gain the South. It worked well. Reagan rode the Southern Strategy to victory like a master horseman, and the politics of the South, again, changed forever.

Now in the 21st century, those same southern conservative families, leaders of the South, are solidly red Republican voters. And GUESS WHOSE SIDE THE KLAN IS ON! In the 21st century, the KKK, Neo-Nazis, White Supremacists, and southern conservatives voted as a block–all for Trump.

The Democrats are the progressives now, and the Klan has never left the side of the southern conservatives–they’re all Right Wing, now.

If Your remark is to me __ the name is Justin. and You must be a real IDIOT if you cannot comprehend what was written. I never said the Leftists goal was to attack white people; I simply pointed out they were attacking “white supremacy”, a false narrative of their own making, and the history I presented is accurate. I can’t help it if You were playing hooky from class that day.

The fact remains, even though I didn’t address it in this piece, the Left is out to cleanse our society of all white European influences and one can verify this through their own words:

America could destroy every Confederate monument and that would still not satisfy the Left, especially the Black Caucus and some black and Hispanic communities across America. They would continue this cultural cleansing aimed at white society. Behind their remorseless drive against white culture is an egalitarian extremism rooted in hate and envy.

Democrat Rep. Reginald of Arizona fumes over “six [Confederate] monuments … using tax payer dollars to actually prop up … terrorism of its day“. He has yet to denounce the radicals and the Leftist terrorism that is surging and becoming increasingly more violent.

In June, hundreds of illegal aliens tried to ban U.S. citizens from a city council meeting in Cudahy, CA. Shouts of “white supremacists back to Europe” were fired across the halls and outside.

In an August 2013 New Black Panther Broadcast, Samir Shabbaz said, “You’re going to have to kill some of these babies, just born three seconds ago … go into the God damn nursery … and just kill everything white in sight …“. His hate-filled rant called for bombing white churches and “[burning] up some cracker white supremacy”, if blacks wanted to be free.

In January 2017, a Black Lives Matter activist in Seattle, a preschool teacher, calling for reparations and the confiscation of white property, said, “We need to start killing people … F**k white supremacy, f**k the U.S. empire“. And then on Flag Day, we were horrified to witness a Bernie Sanders Leftist gun down Representative Steve Scalise (R) and Matt Mitka, both in critical condition at this writing, along with Capitol Police Officer Crystal Griner.

I wonder if these Leftist and Democrats have forgotten that free black men owned slaves prior to the Civil War too?

As far as the KKK and the Neo-Nazis being on the side of the southern conservatives, You show your own remarkable ignorance in political philosophies, because that is a fallacy presented by the Democrats over and over to smear conservatives. In all actuality, Neo-Nazi or National Socialism is a product of the same Marxist philosophy that spawned Stalinist communism, despite all assertions to the contrary; both are totalitarian and socialist and both subscribed to the very cultural cleansing now exhibited by the Democratic Party, as it promotes it politically correct communist erasure of the Founding Fathers from textbooks published by Leftist publishers and now the removal of statues they don’t like, including a most recent vandalism of Christopher Columbus’s statue in Yonkers New York. And yes ___ they are even looking at removing statues of the Founders from the Capitol Building in D.C. But to the point, Naziism and communism are both products of Leftist philosophy and are essentially mirror images of one another or two sides of the same coin.

Start on the Left for totalitarianism. Slide right towards more liberty; our system is still slightly right of the center on this model, and as one goes farther right one finds more freedom and liberty until reaching a Classically formed idea of true freedom in a righteous anarchy, not the second cousin to communism found in the anarchy proposed by the likes of Proudhon and Bakunin.

Some of these Leftists and Democrats are just as evil, if not more so, as the most evil slave traders in American history. They claim to be fighting against “white supremacy” and the racism it perpetrated, but in return, they offer black and brown supremacy, intolerance, racism and hate directed at white people in general. They embrace an anti-American ideology that leads to the abuses and slavery that they claim to despise — the “re-education camps” and the gulags — as they attempt to foist their fractured fairy tales upon all America. They are the very monsters they claim to fight.

Perhaps the Left will start purging their own Democratic Party, as good communists often do, of displays that honor racist Democrats. There’s a statue of former Senator Robert Byrd (D-WVA), a Grand Keagle in the KKK, in West Virginia’s state capitol. There also exists approximately 56 buildings, bridges, highways and centers that are named after Byrd. Do they need to be renamed or destroyed now?

What about Senator J. William Fulbright (D-MO)? Fulbright was a segregationist who voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1957 and 1964, and he opposed implementing the Court’s ruling in Brown v. Board of Education.

Should statues of NAACP co-founder, W.E.B. Du Bois, be toppled? Du Bois was kicked out of the NAACP (now far-left), because he supported segregation. He became a communist, renounce his U.S. citizenship and praised mass murderers Joseph Stalin and Mao Tse-Tung as great leaders.

This is precisely what the Left intends on accomplishing, because at the core of their evil little hearts, these Antifa and Black Lives Matter types are outright communists. They will burn America’s biographies and histories and write new texts aimed at abolishing eternal truths and all religion and morality. They will “cleanse” our modern society to prepare for the “classless society” where what was and is no longer exists. And finally, they will indoctrinate our children and demand that they tear down and destroy what their fathers cherished.

America is in a fight for Her very life, because the “protests” by the radicals of Antifa, Black Lives Matter and other communist backed groups are focused on taking down Our Republic by any means necessary. America is under assault by communists and anarchists bent on defining our rights through the state communist “elite”, more than they have any real concern over “white supremacy”, and in order to succeed, they must undermine and destroy the U.S. Constitution and complete the “fundamental transformation” of America into an authoritarian socialist state.

Every American, who loves America so well, must fight in the halls of state legislatures and the U.S. Congress, and the streets of America if necessary, to protect America. We must demand that our leaders properly use the tools of the Constitution and America and guide America back towards American traditions and the Western and Judeo-Christian principles and ethos, that have always defined America’s free society, in order that America’s Children and Her Children’s Children will continue to live, under the rule of law, free for all eternity.

Try not to come to an intellectual battle of the minds unarmed next time, or go and get Yourself a real education.

In your writings, you have linked Communists, Nazis, Black people and Democrats together as anti-American evil monsters. Elsewhere you add the ACLU, the media, Muslims, and atheists to that enemies list. But you say you support freedom of religion and freedom of expression? For whom?

You’ve told us that the only right way to live is to be of white European ancestry, adhering to traditional Jewish or Christian religions. You’ve even called for a total war to destroy all Muslims. It’s hard to find anything Christ-like in your thinking.

“[L]ook at the roaring 20s, when the government was small and regulations had been curbed back to only the barest of necessity and EVERYONE PROSPERED!” [Emphasis yours]. Everyone? Really? A few million Blacks and Hispanics might disagree. And then what happened to that lightly regulated economy in the 30s?

You are intellectually dishonest and a liar, simply because every thing you just stated is an overly broad generalization on each topic I was addressing at the particular time and taken out of context.

Historically, the Democrats are now properly linked to the Communists and have strayed far from Classical liberalism, just as the NAACP is no longer as interested in supporting the black community as it is in pursuing the Democratic socialist/ communist/ “progressive” agenda. I’ve only noted that Black Lives Matter are communists as shown through who backs and supports them.

I stand for freedom for all colors, so long as they are not trying to subvert the Constitution or attack our American soil and the people who live here, and in another sin of omission, you neglect that I placed Judeo-Christian principles beside Western principles. You would have to be a pure idiot to fail to note that those are in fact the principles that built America and formed the underlying basis for the U.S. Constitution.

So the best you can do is attack me personally, because you have yet to refute any of my positions with any argument on the merit of fact. I’ve only stated that we must aggressively fight back against Islam and any group of Muslims who mean to harm our people or our nation, and if that means their ultimate death and/ or eradication before Ours, your damned right that’s what I mean.

Being Christian doesn’t mean You have to lay down and accept the executioner’s sword, by a long shot, but you are too ignorant to educate on the point. I suggest yiou read the Bible for yourself and you will find it to be replete with examples of God telling Us to defend ourselves and our homes. Yes ___ we can love our enemy and try to get along, but we aren’t commanded to keep turning the other cheek or to sacrifice our life in the face of their assault. Please recall that Islam attacked the U.S. first, and without cause or justification.

The black community in the Jim Crow era was more economically sound with more privately owned black businesses than currently exist today, in this environment that has weakened the black community by making it dependent on the welfare state. During the nine decades between the Emancipation Proclamation and the 1950s, the black family remained a strong, stable institution. Its cataclysmic destruction was subsequently set in motion by such policies as the anti-marriage incentives that are built into the welfare system have served only to exacerbate the problem. As George Mason University professor Walter E. Williams, a black conservative, puts it: “The welfare state has done to black Americans what slavery couldn’t do, what Jim Crow couldn’t do, what the harshest racism couldn’t do. And that is to destroy the black
family.” Hoover Institution Fellow Thomas Sowell, another black conservative, concurs: “The black family, which had survived centuries of slavery and discrimination, began rapidly disintegrating in the liberal welfare state that subsidized unwed pregnancy and changed welfare from an emergency rescue to a way of life.”

In the 1930s, with authoritarian socialist President FDR in office, naturally the economy was strictly regulated due to the manufactured economic collapse of 1929. It was FDR policies that caused the Depression to last ten years longer than it most likely would have under natural economic conditions. The near collapse of the American economy in the 1930s was mainly blamed on the failure of competition. Democrats have always over-regulated since their beginning.

The type of free market competitiveness that prevailed in the decades preceding the Depression resulted in trusts, pyramids, “corporatism,” and big business. And what allowed this to happen was the consensus of state/local regulation, largely Democrat controlled at the time, and the near absence of the federal government from the regulatory environment. This reckoning led to a new consensus that was prevalent mainly during the Franklin D. Roosevelt era: the government, not markets, would restore the public’s confidence. That consensus led to a wave of regulatory legislation by the federal government, especially during the 1930s.

As for Korea, there again you are a damn liar. Context is everything. If we had made a preemptive strike in the time frame I wrote that article, or even between now and the next three months or so, it will not be a nuclear war, although I suggested we should consider using “tactical nukes”on our part to ensure their conventional capability, which is deadly, would be neutralized virtually immediately. Any “nukes” would be coming only from our side and would ultimately save millions of lives in the future, in much the same manner that the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki did.

I suppose You think the U.S. should just let North Korea have nukes and then submit Us to nuclear blackmail. They are only close to having nukes and are already threatening Us and our allies. Your way allows tyranny, communism and fascism, already a growing worldwide trend, become ever more prevalent. Or don’t you recognize that freedom and liberty have historically only survived to small degrees throughout history?

This is why America is such an Exceptional country, inasmuch as it has stood across the span of time, since its inception, in the gap between freedom for all and the forces of evil and tyranny that would subjugate whole peoples, entire regions or even the world, if nothing stood in the way. Or have you forgotten WWI, WWII and Korea and Vietnam [even though Leftist protests forced our defeat]? Have you forgotten, we won the Cold War only to see our gains abandoned and given away by Leftist Democratic presidents?

I deal in facts, not fallacies, false assumptions and false premises in your manner of presenting an outright lie. All You have done is engaged in a Leftist style attack where one just flings multiple topics against the wall, presents them couched in a lie, and hope something will stick.

The twisted mind is yours. You are the one who calls evil good and good evil, who puts darkness for light and light for darkness, who puts bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter. And You might be a little bit psychotic, since you seem obsessed with attacking me, in your pseudo-intellectual know-nothing manner.

Write away to Your heart’s content, but I have neither the time or the inclination for a continued back and forth with You, since I already know you for the uneducated, intellectually dishonest liar you are. I’ll leave it to the readers to decide for themselves.

My silence does not mean I agree or accept anything you post. More than likely it will be simply another misguided, skewed version of history based on the same false premises and assumptions you present as fact.

Waste all the time you want. I’m writing my next article.

Justin, many people these days have bought into the hyperbolic “Are statues of our Founding Fathers next to go?” No. And it’s a totally different issue. Our Founding Fathers were neither Nazis nor KKK nor traitors to our fledgling nation. Today’s Neo-Nazis and the KKK and many white supremacist organizations in America have a proven, demonstrated history of terrorizing and murdering minorities in our country, even in recent years. (And they publicly endorsed Trump.)

You asked, “Should statues of NAACP co-founder, W.E.B. Du Bois, be toppled? Du Bois was kicked out of the NAACP (now far-left), because he supported segregation. He became a communist, renounce his U.S. citizenship and praised mass murderers Joseph Stalin and Mao Tse-Tung as great leaders.”
All true, for a moment in time. Du Bois was ousted from the NAACP twice during his lifetime of fighting segregation and racism, which he believed were consequences of capitalism. In his formative days, socialism and communism were brand new, and many Americans—whole towns—explored the theory and the practice. The US federal gov’t didn’t like his politics and refused to renew his passport while he was in Ghana. So he renounced his citizenship. So did Elizabeth Taylor, by the way. Certainly Stalin and Mao Tse Tung were mass murderers, as was Andrew Jackson. They all were evil, but were certainly great at leadership.

Taken as a whole, Du Bois’ life studying, exposing and fighting racism is a net positive. Robert E. Lee, not so much. Lee swore to defend the Constitution of the United States of America, then sided with his family in Virginia and led the bloody rebellion that killed half a million Americans. That war killed two percent of the US population. By contrast, WWII only killed one-third of one percent. Lee’s treason harmed our nation far more than Benedict Arnold’s. Lee’s legacy is a myth. He wasn’t that great as a tactician, and certainly chose the wrong strategy—offense—when he probably should have built up the defenses of the South and waited out the North in a defensive war of attrition.

So, yeah. The Confederacy should be studied in museums and libraries and schools. It should not be exalted with monuments and flags at the state capitols. It is time for that ugly part of our history to be exposed for the anti-American evil that it was.
