The following is the wording of a printed statement that Neville Chamberlain waved as he stepped off the plane on 30 September, 1938 after the Munich Conference had ended the day before:
“We, the German Führer and Chancellor, and the British Prime Minister, have had a further meeting today and are agreed in recognizing that the question of Anglo-German relations is of the first importance for our two countries and for Europe.
We regard the agreement signed last night and the Anglo-German Naval Agreement as symbolic of the desire of our two peoples never to go to war with one another again. We are resolved that the method of consultation shall be the method adopted to deal with any other questions that may concern our two countries, and we are determined to continue our efforts to remove possible sources of difference, and thus to contribute to assure the peace of Europe.”
Chamberlain read the statement in front of 10 Downing St. and said:
“My good friends, for the second time in our history, a British Prime Minister has returned from Germany bringing peace with honor. I believe it is peace for our time… Go home and get a nice quiet sleep.”
Germany invaded Poland with a surprise blitzkrieg attack early on September 1, 1939.
And so began World War II.
So much for honoring diplomatic agreements, and getting a good night’s sleep.
Diplomacy is based on the naïve proposition that you can trust the person sitting across the table from you will tell the truth and live up to whatever agreement you come to.
Hitler was known to have said “Only a sucker declares war before firing the first shot”.
There are a lot of naïve people in this world, and unfortunately a large number of them are called diplomats, and their naiveté in trusting the other side of the negotiating table can and does cost lives in large numbers.
If the diplomats of that time period had bothered to read Hitler’s book Mein Kampf they would have seen what was coming, it was a blueprint for what would later become known in history as “The Holocaust”.
Has anyone out there ever noticed that when you practice appeasement, that as soon as you acquiesce to your opponents wants and wishes they immediately come up with another, and on and on until you are bent like a pretzel trying to satisfy them and it never stops, because they have you jumping through hoops, and dancing to their tune.
The only way to negotiate is through a position of strength, and being able to AGREE BUT VERIFY, just taking some clown’s word is not going to feed the bulldog.
It appears that the current crop of supposedly brilliant and educated diplomats are still as naïve as the last batch, and it doesn’t look like it will change anytime soon, and to add insult to injury as soon as their brilliant work goes south, the first ones they call on to bail them out of their mistakes, are the men and women in uniform but even then, they want to impose rules of engagement on them, war in any of its facets is not civilized, and only some idiot who has never been in one would be stupid enough to think otherwise.
Patton was right “If we must go to war, throw in everything including the kitchen sink and kick them in the ass, and if they don’t surrender, keep kicking until they do”!
WAKE UP AMERICA!!!
