Fredrick: Absence of Leadership
It took him three days, but Obama finally made a public statement about the terrorist attempt to down flight 253 over Detroit on Christmas Day. Briefly speaking from a Marine Corps base in Hawaii, Obama said on December 28, “We will not rest until we find all who were involved and hold them accountable. The American people should be assured that we are doing everything in our power to make sure you and your family are secure during this holiday season. This incident, like several that have preceded it demonstrates that an alert and courageous citizenry are far more resilient than an isolated extremist. … We do not yet have all the answers about this latest attempt, but those who would slaughter innocent men, women and children must know that the United States will do more than simply strengthen our defenses. We will continue to use every element of our national power to disrupt, to dismantle and defeat the violent extremists who threaten us, whether they are from Afghanistan or Pakistan, Yemen or Somalia, or anywhere where they are plotting attacks against the U.S. homeland. … As Americans, we will never give in to fear or division. We will be guided by our hopes, our unity and our deeply held values.”
I can’t speak for all Americans, but I suspect that many doubt whether “deeply held values” can stop terrorists better than automatic weapons in the hands of United States Marines or barrages of cruise missiles fired from Navy ships. In his first 11 months as a temporary occupant of our Oval Office, I haven’t seen much evidence that Obama’s words have been any more effective in stopping the bad guys around the world than the “strongly worded letters of condemnation” routinely issued by bureaucrats in United Nations. And if Obama believes that closing the terrorist detainee center at Guantanamo will put an end to al-Qaeda recruiting, he deserves the Neville Chamberlain naïveté award more than his Nobel Peace Prize.
Obama probably thought that saying, “We will not rest until we find all who were involved and hold them accountable” would offer comfort to some, but five minutes after he said he would not rest he returned to his golf game at Luana Hills Country Club. I have the feeling that many Americans would have preferred hearing something like, “We understand that flight 253’s would-be bomber was trained in Yemen. Five minutes ago I authorized a cruise missile attack on the known terrorist training camps in that country. This is a word of warning to Muslim terrorists around the world: any attempt to kill innocent Americans anywhere in the world will be met with a fast and powerful response. Our arsenal is inestimable. It stands at the ready. It will be used. You will lose. You will die.”
In early November Obama the restless also said, “I will not rest until all Americans who want work can find work.” Some might wonder how many jobs and terrorist evidence he will find on a Hawaiian golf course. Frankly, Americans don’t care if Obama rests and plays golf now and then at the very least it will keep his mug off our televisions for a while but that rest should come after, not during, his actions to protect and defend the United States. I do not want to hear “We will not rest.” I want to see explosions and smoking terrorist corpses. Then he can play golf with his union campaign contributors.
“This incident, like several that have preceded it demonstrates that an alert and courageous citizenry are far more resilient than an isolated extremist…” An “incident?” No, it was a terrorist attempt to kill almost 300 Americans.
“An alert and courageous citizenry?” Yes, we should be alert and courageous, but the State Department should not be approving two-year visas to Nigerian Muslims who have traveled to Yemen. And it certainly should have revoked the visa after Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab’s father told the CIA his son was someone to keep an eye on. Pretty much every American who boards a plane nowadays spends at least a few moments considering how he will be “alert and courageous” if required. We all realize we may be called upon to act like Todd Beamer did on flight 93 over Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001. But anyone who thinks about it has to come to the sad conclusion that everyone needs to be “alert and courageous” only because politically correct imbeciles in the United States government are issuing travel visas to radical Muslims and allowing Army Majors to give PowerPoint presentations on jihad without being drummed out of the Armed Forces and placed on 24-hour surveillance. Frankly, most airline passengers don’t want to be alert and courageous; they just want to get where they are going with as few hassles as possible… and arrive alive.
And what makes the appeaser-in-chief believe the flight 253 “incident” was by an “isolated extremist” and not part of any larger jihad strategy? Did not Abdulmutallab get trained in Yemen? Did someone else not provide him with the explosives? (One would assume that even in Yemen a jihadist shopper cannot purchase PETN at the corner store. But if Yemen does have a chain of “Explosives ‘R Us” stores it should not be too difficult to program their locations into a cruise missile’s flight path.)
Why is Obama afraid of calling terrorists what they are? Why must the war on terror be an “overseas contingency operation?” Why must the detonation of a road-side bomb be a “man-caused disaster?” Why must he continue to refer to Islam as a “religion of peace,” when it is Muslims who have instigated more than 14,000 terrorist acts worldwide since September 11, 2001?
After studying Obama’s words and actions since he took office, one can consider only a few explanations for his inability to deal with terrorism and none of them are desirable:
1. Obama is a fool, who simply does not understand that there are millions of Muslims who want to destroy Western culture, annihilate Israel, and kill as many Jews, Americans, and non-Muslims as they can. He looks at terrorists as he looks at common criminals: misguided individuals who resort to violence only because they have not been given good “life choices.” He does not accept that there are evil people following evil philosophies who cannot be “rehabilitated.”
2. Obama is sympathetic to Muslims because of his childhood in Jakarta, Indonesia an indoctrination that blinds him to the realities of jihad and the radical Muslim war against the west. That inability to view the world from a uniquely American perspective is, of course, precisely why the Founding Fathers required that we elect only natural born citizens to our nation’s highest office. They were correct; the American electorate was wrong.
3. Obama does not care if there is a major terrorist attack that kills hundreds or even thousands of U.S. citizens. Such a disaster would frighten millions of Americans and he could then use the situation to his advantage, declaring an emergency and assuming additional powers that would be used to institute his planned societal changes. (As White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel famously stated, “Never let a crisis go to waste.”)
If there are explanations other than these three, I do not see them. If that does not frighten you, it should…
