Cupp: A Gunowner’s Ode to Christmas
What do firearms and this blessed holiday have in common? Well, for one, liberals don’t like to talk about either.
Christmas is coming. And for many Americans, that means opening gifts around the tree, big family dinners and Midnight Mass. No disrespect to Norman Rockwell – but Christmas always reminds me of shooting. Sure, I love seeing my family, gorging on the kind of food and drink that are usually impermissible during the other 11 months of the year and finding some fabulous little trinket under the tree. And every year I bring a batch of ‘Cupp-cakes’ to my local police and fire precincts. But enough of Capra. If I’m honest, it’s also about the gun.
Almost a decade ago, my friends and I had a lovely Christmas brunch at Les Halles in New York City-a superb French brasserie where, rightly so, nearly everything on the menu once had parents. After enough pork belly, crispy duck and rabbit ragout to swell our ankles and give us heart palpitations, we exchanged gifts. In a small, unmarked envelope addressed to me was a gift certifi cate for a shooting lesson. I was thrilled. I went down to the West Side Rifle and Pistol Range, in the dank and gritty basement of a building on 20th Street, to cash in my gift. After the lesson, we took to the targets. I squeezed the trigger of the .22 at the paper bullseyes in front of me, and I was officially hooked. Over the years that followed, I took up skeet shooting and hunting, and eventually bought my own 12-gauge shotgun. In recent years, the month between Thanksgiving and Christmas has been marked by a trip upstate for deer hunting, and (hopefully) a freezer full of venison follows. And every Christmas, I go back to the West Side range for an hour to shoot that .22, which always feels a little smaller and lighter in my hands. It’s a simple Christmas pleasure, a total escape and my annual gift to myself.
And I’m not alone. For manyAmericans, the holidays wouldn’t be the same without their guns. Maybe they’re putting a turkey, a rabbit or some venison on the table for their families, or they’re gathering the old gang together for thean annual winter hunt. Or maybe they’re donating a deer to one of the country’s countless collection and processing centers that feed hundreds of thousands of homeless and hungry every year. In New York state alone, since 1999 the Venison Donation Coalition has processed 337.51 tons of venison, or the equivalent of 2,700,800 meals served.
Between land conservation, deer population control and feeding the hungry, hunters are some of our most important humanitarians. And shooters, too. Studies prove that right-to-carry states have less crime, not more.
According to the American Rifl eman’s celebrated ‘Armed Citizen’ column, gun owners use firearms for protection as frequently as 2.5 million times a year, saving lives. And all of this is in jeopardy. President Obama is no friend to gun owners and hunters.
That’s evidenced not only by his frightening legislative promises to make it nearly impossible to own a gun or even buy ammunition, but also by his nomination of anti-gun public health advocate David Michaels to the OSHA post and his appointment of Cass Sunstein, who thinks deer should be able to sue you, as regulatory czar. And with the economy down, the Obama administration is looking to squeeze some much-needed cash out of hunters and gun owners, via sweeping fines, taxes and fees. But it won’t work.
In Idaho, lawmakers hiked the fee on out-of-state hunting licenses this year to raise money for the Fish and Game Department. As of October, revenue from tag sales was down 9 percent. States that want to raise revenue should be making it easier and cheaper for hunters, not harder and more expensive.
The Obama administration’s elitist antagonism of American gun owners and hunters is just bad socio-economics. And it feels particularly mean-spirited as Christmas approaches. But good luck telling the grinches and scrooges of the liberal Left that, for many of us, Christmas just isn’t Christmas without our guns. After all, Christmas, like the great American pastimes of shooting and hunting, is something you whisper about under your breath in liberal circles. On that note, I’m off to the range.

You are absolutely correct Ed. Here in Illinois, we have the *Second Amendment Sisters* and they kick rumpus. For the last two years in March at our IL. Gun Owners Lobby Day they have made a very impressive showing.
Wow, not only is Ms. Cupp right on (except I would never call Obama president, as no illegal alien can hold the office, she is also outstanding pretty and she like guns. It doesn’t get much better than that, unless she also is a biker, or a gear head of some sort.
Anyway, how I wish all the women in America would wake up to the reasons for not only owning but carrying guns at all times, including having one within reach in their homes. Desperate times will without fail call for desperation by many people that have been or are being destroyed by every out-of-control government. Come on, Guys, if the women ever wake up as they have over other issues and know it is not better to be raped, beaten brutally, or killed, you can bet they will carry the ball that most men seem afraid to even pick up. Nothing personal but it seems to me that few fight back even against their local governments, let alone the federal invaders.
Back to the control of crime by every last one of us being armed at all times. If any of you care to see a comparison between the most controlled area (Washington, District of Corruption and Pedophilia), to the near 2nd Amendment state (Vermont), and to a middle of the road state (Missouri, look in the Ed Lewis archives under — Ah, heck, never mind – I will go through my files and post it sometime during the next week. I would tonight but I have been on this since 8 this morning writing documents in my now seven year battle against the county I lived and their quite corrupt manner of stealing people’s private property.
The article has accurate (at the time) facts that others might find useful in convincing others of the crime decreases as gun control decreases. And, as always, no level of government has any authority to regulate the exercise of any right and the right of self-protection (including against government) of our lives is the most inalienable of all, because without life, other rights mean very little.
Anyway, Ms. Cupp, I salute both your beauty and brain, a most welcome combination in the world of supporting gun rights and the real America.
I do not wonder that Barry Soetoro (aka Barrack Hussein Obama) would hate guns and gun owners. He hates the Constitution and everything it stands for and calls those who stand on the Constitution terrorists. I am sorry that he is such a deluded individual, but I can not help him.
He spent many years under the influence of a religious leader (I DID NOT say a Christian leader) who apparently was not able, or was unwilling to, teach him that he should be a truthful individual. Since Barry is a liars liar, he has apparently chosen Satan as his god. [John 8:44] so I do not expect any truth from him, nor do I expect wisdom to be in Barry since God the Father, creator of Heaven and earth is the ONLY source of wisdom and Barry denies Him, he will not find wisdom. His god can make him diabolically clever, but that surely is not wisdom.
I am sure that true Christians who are naturally Constitutionalists are a terror unto Barry, but it is not the guns we own which he should fear, but it is the God whom we serve who is in Truth a terror unto him. 2Corinthians 5:11. I feel sorry for the ignorant mutt and I hope for his sake and this Nations sake that the poor dumb animal wakes up.
Excellent article. I first shot a gun at the ripe young age of 61…that’s right. I was always told “you can’t shoot, you’re a girl”. My new husband, retired from federal law enforcement, handed me his trap gun…”shoot it.” That first pull of the trigger on that 12 guage shotgun had me hooked as well. I now own my own shotgun, a long rifle, and two pistols for self-defense, am a member of NRA, and yes, I have a concealed carry permit.
I just feel better knowing I can defend myself…and it’s legal! It’s my right according to our constitution, and I for one, do not want any liberal loon knocking on my door demanding my guns or trying to tax my ammunition. The State of Washington is actually an open carry state, and this State encourages secure storage of weapons and actually waives the sales tax if you purchase a gun safe. Sounds smart to me. I enjoy Ms. Cupp’s commentaries and her appearances on O’Reilly and Hannity, and it does my heart good knowing that conservative young women will be at the forefront of helping us all keep our legal right to bear arms. Again, excellent article, and happy hunting…I hope your freezer is full of venison!
