Peasants with pitchforks and torches
August 1, 2009 – In yesterday’s column I wrote that Congress has grown fearful of the citizens. Rather than facing their constituents back home during the summer recess, many Congressmen and Senators have canceled town hall meetings and decided instead to remain hidden.
To be sure, there is nothing particularly wrong with this scenario from a purely American point of view. Our Founders were convinced that once the citizens began to fear their government, the Republic was in deep trouble, and that elected representatives need to have a healthy fear of the electorate.
It has been so long since elected officials in Washington were scared of the people that the present circumstances are bound to come as a shock. But this wakeup call was sorely needed and long overdue.
Congress and the President need to realize that they cannot continue their relentless assault on the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, capitalism, and all that made this nation great, without a fight. There are still multi-millions of citizens in this country who are more than willing to fight against their government if they become convinced that the government is a threat to the country.
Never before in all of my years of observing politics have I witnessed such sheer outrage among the common, everyday citizens in the heartland. They are more than willing to become ‘peasants with pitchforks and torches’ who storm the offices of our elected officials to demand they cease and desist from their assault on the principles most Americans hold as sacred.
Peasants with pitchforks and torches.
So far the outrage is a non-violent one. But how long with that last?
The answer is simple. The outrage of the citizens will remain non-violent as long as our elected representatives express a willingness to hear our complaints and then act to correct their misguided actions over the past 6 months.
Democrats in particular, and a few Republicans, need to hear loud and clear that they represent us, the citizens, and not ACORN, MoveOn.org, George Soros, SEIU, the autoworkers unions, and Barack Obama cronies in FreddieMac, FannieMae, AIG, and other conglomerates that were bought off with our tax dollars.
If they listen, and make corrections, well and good. If they don’t, then they can reasonably expect this movement of ‘peasants with pitchforks and torches’ to turn ominous.
For starters, my friends, take a look at THIS and note who voted in favor of the government takeover of healthcare in the Waxman committee.
We cannot allow these sorry excuses for representatives get away with this with no firm response from the people.
